Lawrence Williams Project @ Jimmy Mak's w/Blue Cranes

Lawrence Williams was arguably the greatest Jazz composer AND drummer to have lived in the Pacific Northwest, and left behind a rich and original body of jazz compositions when he died in 2006.  His compositions have been recorded by master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, Grammy nominated vocalist Nancy King, Blue Note recording artist Geri Allen and the Dutch Metropole Orchestra, among others.

Saxophonist David Valdez leads the Lawrence Williams Project, a group dedicated to exploring the work of this stellar composer. The all star line-up features on Dan Gaynor piano (and musical director) and top NYC tenor saxophonist Kenny Brooks. Kenny has toured and recorded with Charlie Hunter, the Ohio Players, Steve Smith, Les Claypool, MMW, String Cheese Incident, and is a long time member of Bob Weir's (Grateful Dead) Rat Dog. Paul Mazzio, one of the Northwest's premier Jazz trumpet players will be rounding out the front line. Canadian bassist Michael Rousch will be making a rare US appearance with the project. Filling the drum chair of the late Mr. Williams will be Portland's own drum legend Todd Strait, who has toured and recorded with Karrin Allyson, Woody Herman, and Eldar Virtue.

Don't miss this all-star group as they perform the compositions of a true American master, on the evening before the recording of their first CD!

"Lawrence's music was raw, creative and challenging, and it legitimized my musical personality, much like Billy Strayhorn did for Duke Ellington.”-  Marcus Belgrave, 2006

Hi from the other Portland! Sounds like an amazing show ... wish I could be there. Say hello to one of the baddest tenor players on the planet for me!

I will.

I'm frantically practicing so I don't get my ass kicked too hard.
